EcoPlum Shines a Spotlight on its B Corp Suppliers: Memobottle Makes Portability Easier and Takes on Plastic

This is the seventh profile in our blogpost series about our B Corp suppliers.

Memobottle™ makes potability and portability a lot easier when you can carry your own water in a unique, flat, compact design—stashing it easily in a bag alongside your laptop, gear or books.

The Australian design brand transforms something as ordinary as a water bottle into an iconic memorable symbol of responsible innovation and intentional, sustainable living.

What Inspired the Company’s Launch?

Jesse Leeworthy and Jonathan (Jonno) Burt, childhood friends and college roommates, started memobottle in 2014, based in Melbourne, Australia. Jesse earned a degree in Product Design Engineering and worked for a prestigious product design consultancy, where he developed products that had a positive impact on the consumer, health, and environmental sectors. Jonno leaned more into business finance and accounting and wanted to be a Management Consultant, inspired as a 13-year old when he visited a cousin at Harvard Business School.

Growing up along the coast of Australia in a small town, the idea for memobottle came about after Jesse and Jonno saw the harm single-use plastic was having on our oceans and the environment. But practicality led to the bottles’ unique flat design.

As young professionals, they noticed that cylindrical water bottles did not fit well inside bags with items like laptops and books. Jesse took up the challenge of designing a reusable water bottle that was more compatible with things people usually carry and that would fit in seamlessly with other items being transported.

In 2014, memobottle launched on crowdsourcing site Kickstarter. The company exceeded their modest goal of $15k within 36 hours and then went on to raise $250k in 45 days. The Kickstarter platform enabled them to create a product, a business, and an environmental movement all at once!

Measured Impact

Memobottle measures its impact in two key ways:

1.     The number of single-use plastic water bottles displaced (not purchased) by the use of memobottle products.

2.     The total cumulative number of days of clean water provided to people in need.

Through the sale of their products, Memobottle has diverted over 300 million single-use plastic bottles from landfills.

The company has partnered with U.S. based water.org, a nonprofit that provides five months of clean water access for people in need for every memobottle sold. Their latest total is over 50 million days of clean water.

Behind their drive to make a real impact are stats like these:

  • 75 billion gallons of water in single-use plastic bottles are consumed globally each year
  • Only 1 in 5 single-use plastic bottles are actually recycled. The rest end up in oceans and landfills.
  • A plastic bottle takes at least 450 years to disintegrate and some experts have said up to 1000 years.

What Makes Memobottle Unique?

Why must water bottles be cylindrical? Memobottle decided they didn’t have to be. The founders set about creating an elegant, minimalist design. These water bottles are flat, inspired by paper, and designed to fit where other bottles don't, making them easier to store in all kinds of bags.

Sustainable Products, Manufacturing, and Distribution

Memobottle sources ethically and environmentally sound materials for its products and utilizes recycled packaging and BPA-/BPS-free materials. The bottles are crafted using Eastman Tristan, a shatter-resistant, durable BPA-free plastic product used in infant products and medical devices.

There are eight warehouses across the world that enable the company to reduce its carbon footprint by minimizing transportation costs and time. Shipping cartons are made from recycled cardboard and are made to eliminate the need for any wasteful filler material, further minimizing the company’s carbon footprint.
